Whaling Museum history symposium
The 29th annual Whaling History Symposium presented by the Kendall Institute of the New Bedford Whaling Museum will be held Saturday and Sunday. The two-day conference will feature sessions on a variety of topics associated with the whale fishery, including genetics and whale abundance as they relate to the whale hunt, whaling in the German Democratic Republic, native Hawaiian whaling stories, plus the presentation of the 20th annual L. Byrne Waterman Award. Established in 1985 by L. Byrne Waterman of Baltimore, Md., the award recognizes outstanding contributions to whaling-related research and pedagogy in the arts, humanities and sciences. The 2003 recipient was Professor Jaap Bruijn from Leiden University in the Netherlands. Symposium sessions will be 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, with a banquet and evening program from 7:30 to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The cost to attend the complete symposium is $100 for members, $110 for all others. For Saturday and Sunday symposium sessions only, the cost is $70 for members, $75 for all others. Tickets for the banquet and evening program are $45 for members, $50 for all others.
