Residents of Dennis feel a sense of pride in their home by the sea. The quiet little town, incorporated in 1793, was named for Josiah Dennis, a favorite minister. The town was involved in the maritime activities of the 1800's and was full of the amazing tales of clipper ship adventures. As the twentieth century approached and the glory days of sea captains faded, Dennis residents turned to commercial fishing and land-based industries. Dennis comes into its own during the summer months, with special events every week. Home to the nation's oldest summer theater, the Cape Playhouse, Dennis offers varied summer activities, with arts and craft shows, concerts on the village green and Dennis Festival Days, held in August, which celebrate the friendly heritage of this All American New England town.

Dennis finally has a new harbormaster, and he's a familiar face.
Ed Tierney grew up around the corner from Gray's Beach on Yarmouth's north side. He's spent his life on and around the water, and he can't imagine a more perfect job.
"We always had an eight-foot dinghy with a little motor," he says. "My next door neighbor's dad was a commercial fisherman who took us kids out on his boat. The love of the water is just part of me."
Tierney has been assistant harbormaster in Dennis since 1999, apprenticing to Eddie Goggin, who retired last year. A 1990 graduate of Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, he worked as a supervisor in carpentry before becoming assistant harbormaster in Yarmouth. He trained for four weeks at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and 14 weeks at the police academy in Plymouth. "When I started the job in Dennis, I did 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. shifts," he says. "I didn't mind it. I love the water at night, and I'm glad I have the policing experience. It helps me keep safety a priority on the waterfront." Tierney is now responsible for enforcing federal, state and local marine laws. He is certified for all aspects of marina management, including mooring and dock maintenance, upkeep of aids to navigation, slip holder assignments, inspections and is trained in marine search and rescue. In his endorsement to selectmen for Tierney's approval, Town Administrator Bob Canevazzi said search committee members without exception "shared the observations that Ed Tierney possessed the unique qualities that separated him from the other [20] candidates."
Tierney says he's learned to anticipate weather conditions and problems of boats entering and exiting Sesuit Harbor. He's working on Uncle Freeman's Landing and Horsefoot Cove projects and he's been active with the waterways commission. "Anybody who loves the water and wants to assure people's safety is out there on an eight-hour shift," he says "I'm working with the environmental police for waterways safety. It is an enormous venture," Tierney says.
